Tyre pressure in UAE heat: check cold, never bleed hot

Why tyre pressure climbs in UAE heat, how to check it cold, the 0.3 bar rule for warm tyres, where to find your car's figure and why not to let air out.

Short answer

  • Use the pressure on your door-jamb placard or in the manual, not the maximum printed on the tyre.
  • Check cold: after the car has stood for at least 2 hours, or been driven no more than 3 km.
  • If you can only check warm tyres, add 0.3 bar to the recommended figure, per 2018 advice.
  • Pressure rises in the heat. Don't let air out of hot tyres; that leaves them under-inflated.
  • Check at least monthly, including the spare, and before long drives.

Set your tyre pressure to the figure on your car's door-jamb placard, and check it when the tyres are cold. In UAE heat the reading climbs as you drive and as the day warms up, so a midday check at a petrol station will show more than the true cold figure. Don't let air out of hot tyres to bring the number down: once they cool, they will be under-inflated.

This guide gives no "summer PSI" of its own. The right number is the one your car's maker sets.

Why does tyre pressure go up in the heat?

Air in a tyre expands as it warms. Driving heats the tyre, and so do hot asphalt and the sun. A September 2026 Gulf News piece made the point plainly: heat raises pressure during the day. That piece is tagged as native content and leans on Michelin's advice, so treat it as brand-adjacent, but the physics is not in dispute.

This is why a tyre set correctly at 6am can read noticeably higher by 2pm. That higher reading is expected. The tyre was designed for it.

What tyre pressure should I use in the UAE?

Use your car's recommended cold pressure. You will usually find it:

  • On a placard in the driver's door frame (the door jamb or latch area)
  • Inside the fuel flap, on some cars
  • In the owner's manual

Some placards give two figures: one for normal driving and a higher one for a full load or high speed. Use the one that matches how the car is loaded.

Don't use the number on the tyre sidewall. That is the tyre's maximum pressure, not a recommendation. Gulf News (2026) and Khaleej Times (2018) both point drivers to the placard or manual instead.

If you have changed tyre size, the placard may no longer match. Ask the fitter to check the load rating and pressure for the new size. For stock sizes on popular models, see our Nissan Patrol tyre sizes guide.

How do I check tyre pressure cold?

Khaleej Times published RoadSafetyUAE and Michelin advice in April 2018:

  • A tyre counts as cold if the car has not been driven for at least 2 hours, or has been driven no more than 3 km.
  • If you must check warm tyres, add 0.3 bar to the recommended pressure.
  • Check at least once a month, including all four tyres and the spare.

The easiest routine in the UAE is to check first thing in the morning, before the day heats up, using your own gauge. A small digital gauge is cheap and saves you relying on a forecourt machine.

Worked example: the 0.3 bar rule

Say your placard says 2.4 bar (about 35 psi) cold. These are illustration figures; use your own placard.

Situation What you read What to do
Cold, 7am at home 2.4 bar Correct; leave it
Cold, 7am at home 2.1 bar Add air up to 2.4 bar
Warm, after a 15 km drive 2.6 bar Target is 2.4 + 0.3 = 2.7 bar; add 0.1 bar
Warm, after a 15 km drive 2.9 bar Slightly above warm target; recheck cold next morning rather than bleed
Warm, after a 15 km drive 2.2 bar Well under; add air now, then recheck cold

1 bar is about 14.5 psi. Many forecourt machines show psi.

Should I let air out of my tyres in summer?

No. This is the most common mistake. If a hot tyre reads high and you let air out to match the placard, the tyre will be under-inflated when it cools. The September 2026 Gulf News piece links under-inflation to blowouts, and says not to let air out to lower a hot reading.

Under-inflation is also one of the five blowout causes listed by Sharjah Police in May 2025, as reported by Khaleej Times:

  1. Overloading beyond the tyre's capacity
  2. Incorrect air pressure
  3. Speeding beyond the tyre's rating
  4. Friction between tyres and hot asphalt
  5. Prior misuse, such as driving on unsuitable terrain

How often should I check tyre pressure?

Advice in the UAE press varies a little:

Source How often
Khaleej Times, RoadSafetyUAE and Michelin advice (2018) At least monthly, plus the spare
Gulf News checklist from a tyre distributor (2023) Every two weeks
Road Safety UAE via The National (2026) Every six weeks, even on new tyres, plus a walk-around before trips
Gulf News native piece (2026) About once a month, five minutes

A sensible floor is once a month and before any long drive, especially in summer. If your car has a tyre pressure warning light, it will flag a big drop, but it is not a substitute for a gauge.

Can low tyre pressure really cause crashes?

Yes. Khaleej Times reported in 2018 that Abu Dhabi Police linked rapid tyre pressure loss to 28 accidents and 14 deaths in 2016. Abu Dhabi Police's "Safe Summer" campaign in June 2026 again told drivers to keep tyres at the recommended pressure and to avoid overloading.

The National reported in August 2026 that heat can make pressure fluctuate and that this often ends in under-inflation. If a tyre does fail at speed, see our guide on what to do after a tyre blowout.

Does tyre pressure affect fuel costs?

It does, and October 2026 is a good month to notice. UAE fuel prices rose on 1 October 2026: Super 98 went from Dh3.80 to Dh4.40 a litre and diesel from Dh4.30 to Dh4.80 (Khaleej Times).

An under-inflated tyre flexes more and rolls with more resistance, so the engine works harder. We could not find a UAE-specific figure for how much fuel low pressure wastes. The figure you may see quoted, "up to 20%", is a 2016 ESMA claim about tyres with an "excellent" fuel-efficiency grade compared with "very poor" ones. It is about the tyre's rating, not its pressure, and it is a claim, not a test result we have seen.

What about sand driving and lower pressure?

Letting air out for sand is a separate practice and is not covered here. If you deflate for the desert, follow your vehicle maker's guidance and re-inflate to the placard pressure before you return to tarmac. Never drive on roads at sand pressures.

What else should I check at the same time?

While you are at each wheel:

What to check before you act

  • Find your car's cold pressure on the door-jamb placard or in the manual.
  • Check in the morning before driving, with your own gauge.
  • If you check warm, add 0.3 bar to the target; never bleed a hot tyre down.
  • Include the spare.
  • Recheck after any big load or before a long trip.
  • We checked these sources on 23 October 2026.

Questions people ask

Should I reduce tyre pressure in summer in Dubai?

No. Set the pressure on your car's placard when the tyres are cold. The reading rises as tyres heat up, and letting air out of hot tyres leaves them under-inflated once they cool.

What tyre pressure should I use in the UAE?

The figure on your car's door-jamb placard, fuel-flap label or owner's manual. Some cars list a higher figure for a full load. The number on the tyre sidewall is a maximum, not a target.

Is it OK to check tyre pressure at a petrol station?

Yes, if the drive there was short. Khaleej Times advice in 2018 was to check after no more than 3 km, or to add 0.3 bar if the tyres are already warm.

How often should I check tyre pressure in summer?

At least once a month and before long trips, including the spare. Some UAE advice is more frequent, such as every two weeks.

Does low tyre pressure use more fuel?

Under-inflated tyres roll with more resistance, which uses more fuel. In 2016 ESMA claimed tyres with an excellent fuel-efficiency grade could save up to 20% compared with very poor ones; that figure is about tyre grades, not pressure.
